A pretty hilarious take on how real life check outs would be if they were like online checkouts. (originally viewed at integershoppingmarketing.com

Now although this is tongue in cheek, there was a comment on the original article that gave me pause.  Mpaskal said..

While this is hysterical and very accurate, I haven’t yet come to expect the same experience online that I have at retail. I shop online for things I don’t need immediately and require a higher involvement level (easier to do extensive research and comparison). When I go to the store, I expect some human interaction and a very simple checkout process. But I think that’s a great way to think about enhancing the online shopping experience…

I guess this could be true of existing or traditional online grocery shopping experiences.  But as online shopping progresses and matures it is not difficult to imagine that this experience will improve significantly.

Take for instance the user improvements with Amazon shopping over the last decade.   Initially, the experience could definitely have been considered clunky. However, right now the UX is one of the best out there and arguably better than the bricks and mortar experience.

Just a few of the online shopping benefits that we’re beginning to see finally ring true:

  • Members can buy online or mobile with one click without logging in, without even being on Amazon and products will automatically be shipped to your home – free shipping
  • Members can have regular products set to be re-ordered automatically(take for instance shampoo) and delivered to your home – free shipping
  • Product discovery and product information is finally getting to a point where it’s really adding considerable value – to an extent that it’s better than any in-store staff knowledge (with the exception of specialty stores)
  • Product reviews are easily at hand to help with every purchase decision

This is only going to get better as more and more competition and niche consumer focused online shopping services spring up.

In a few years, I can see that this video will be re-made, but this time showing an online shopper having to stand in line as the person in front has payment issues…runs to pick up another item…takes their time unloading products…
