The End Of The Gluten Free Diet?

celiacvideoHi Everyone,

News broke this week from Australia (the land of scary animals and insects) that the gluten free diet could be a thing of the past! According to ABC Australia scientists from Melbourne have developed a vaccine which could mean people who suffer from Celiac’s Disease could actually start eating any type of food without any side effects. This is wonderful news to those of us who are currently struggling to keep up their gluten-free-diet. Imagine the possibilities -  warm hearty pizza, crusty fresh bread, wholesome pasta or even being able to eat out at restaurants in peace-of-mind!

However, it may surprise you to find out that some of the reactions to this vaccine have not been so positive.  Comments posted on Gluten -Free Organics And More seemed to portray a harsh reluctance to deviate from a strict gluten-free diet for any form of “medical treatment”, despite the possibility that their reaction to gluten may be significantly reduced if they were to participate in the vaccine.

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that sticking to a gluten-free diet is not an easy task – one must have an understanding of the key offending ingredients, check food labels at the supermarket all the time, and always request gluten free meals when dining out at restaurants and friends houses etc.. Is it possible that the reluctance to endorse any such vaccine is due to the effort and hardships one with Celiac’s disease has to go through, in order to research, buy, prepare and maintain a gluten-free diet in the first place? It seems as though some of the comments from Gluten Freeway LA touch on this subject. It appears as though they are actually that used to a gluten-free diet that they would only take the vaccine on vacation – to places like France and Italy so they can partake in some of the local culinary wonders, like some fresh crusty baguette’s – Classic!

The more I’ve looked into the reactions of Celiac’s to this vaccine, the more I find that those who have already established themselves as hardcore gluten-free-dieters are more likely to stay away from the vaccine than those who have just found out that they have to now start a gluten-free life. This post, posted on Dancer And Her Geek seems to support this notion. It also brings up the point that most of the foods that this vaccine would allow one to eat (as part of a feel free to eat gluten diet) are actually high fat, high sugar starchy foods.

So what do you think – Would you find this vaccine useful? Would it be useful to you despite the fact that you have already established your gluten free diet – Or does that not matter? Having met many people who suffer from Celiac’s Disease both friends and family (and I am not the only one) this is just such an amazing topic. I would love to know what your thoughts are.
