Walnuts May Prevent Breast Cancer

walnutsAttention!!

The BBC has reported that a new US study, presented to the American Association for Cancer Research earlier this month, has found that eating walnuts may actually help to prevent breast cancer. As part of the study, mice were fed the human equivalent of two ounces of walnuts per day resulting in a decrease in tumor size over time. Researcher Dr Elaine Hardman, of Marshall University School of Medicine, said: although the study was carried out in mice, the beneficial effect of walnuts was likely to apply to humans too.

“We know that a healthy diet overall prevents all manner of chronic diseases.” and further… “It is clear that walnuts contribute to a healthy diet that can reduce breast cancer.”

Before you all go out and stock up on walnuts, there are a few things one must look out for when selecting walnuts. The best walnuts are low in calories, saturated fat and sodium, but high in fiber and protein. Manufacturers also have a habbit of adding nasty preservatives into nut snacks, so look out for a preservative free option as well.

Using the Foodessential database, the two most ideal walnut products are Fisher Snack Naturals Golden Fresh Walnuts and Back To Nature All Naturals Walnuts. Both are low in calories, sodium and saturated fat, and high in protein and fiber. And as an added bonus, both are peanut and preservative free.
