Color Free Children’s Cereals

girl-choosing-125x200From a total list of 21 kids cereals we disappointingly found only 4 products that were color free as listed in the table below.  They were all from the Annie’s Cereal range.

Many of the products that did contain ingredients potentially used as colors such colors as Calcium Carbonate, Modified Wheat Starch, Yellow 6, Yellow 5, Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Red 40, Ascorbic Acid, Blue 1 and many others.  Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 are both somewhat controversial colors encompassed in a debate as to their potentially harmful effects particularly in relation to behavior modification and ADHD in children.

A recent study published by Southampton University, England  in the highly respected medical journal, The  Lancet, stated that some combination of certain colors and preservatives may lead to an increased risk of ADHD in children.  The report made reference to the colors yellow 5 and yellow 6 among others as being potentially harmful.  Although nothing has been concluded there is talk of a ban of these colors in the UK and Europe wide.  As far as we can find out the FDA is yet to draw any conclusions.

Which of the above products have yellow 5 and 6 in them? That would have been a really helpful article if you had included that information. I would also be interested in articles about sweeteners such as aspartame.

Thanks for the comment. You are absolutely right about yellow 5 and 6. We’ve been so busy with the launching of the beta widget that we haven’t had time to get to making it possible to find yellow 5 and 6 in the widget yet. However, it is in for release 1.1 to come some time next week.

Aspartame is a very good subject for an article and i’ll be sure to get something written about that shortly. Again, thanks for the commment.
