Nationmaster.com – review
Rated in Nielsens Top ten fastest growing educational sites, nationmaster.com is a novel site with a lot of potential. In a nutshell, nationmaster.com is a site that enables you to easily create graphs ofna large variety of statistcs so as to compare between different countries. The graphs sit on top of a variety of credible data sources and offers significant scope, covering such topics as food, health, crime and economy.
I used the site to generate a a graph that shows the consumption of soft drinks per person per year in liters as you can see below.
It literally took me about 15 seconds to produce and shows some really intersting statistics. Such as the US consumes almost 6 times more than france. And almost twice as much as the next closest country – Ireland.
But the functionality doesn’t stop there. You can have these statistics represented on a map or, as really caught my interest, you can map different correlations by clicking “correlations” in the top right corner above the graph. You are then presented with a list of correlating other statistics sorted in order of best correlated. In this example there is crime rates 79% inverse correlation (this is pretty strong), or as i’m looking at soft drinks I want to see if there is any correlation between soft drink consumption and obesity – obesity is listed at a 48% correlation. I click this and am presented with a new plotted graph with softdrink consumption on the x axis and obesity on the y axis.
As you can see from the graph there is a week correlation. Which can be expected as there are many many factors that influence obesity in a nation – not just how much softdrink is consumed.
But as a demonstration of the ease of this tool it works.
To summise, this is an effective and easy to use tool that can really compliment your posts with links to custom graphs to help prove your point.
I have included some more correlations here below for fun.
correlation between Macdonalds and the Number of roller coasters per nation – the more macdonalds the more roller coasters …messy.
correlation between Consumption of beer and Happiness – generally the more beer you drink the happier you are. ..didn’t need a graph to tell us that.
Enjoy creating really powerful graphs.
