Superfood Tip 1: Salmon

Salmon is not only delicious, it’s good for you. The healthy fats found in salmon, called omega-3 fats, keep your cholesterol levels healthy and may protect your heart. A recent study shows that salmon may help to reduce the risk of heart failure. You may choose fresh salmon, however it is often much more convenient to buy canned salmon that you can use in sandwiches, on salads and as an ingredient in many heart-healthy recipes.
Of course, to keep your salmon dishes healthy, you want to watch the sodium. Most brands of canned salmon contain a lot of sodium. You can use our FoodEssentials tool to find the brands that contain the least amount of sodium:
While none of the salmon qualifies as low-sodium (less than 140 milligrams) per serving, there are several brands that contain less than 400 milligrams per 100 grams tuna (actual serving sizes vary by brand).
