Superfood Tip 5: Low Fat Yogurt
by Shereen Jegtvig
Like all dairy products, yogurt is rich in calcium and protein. What sets yogurt apart is the presence of friendly bacteria, sometimes called probiotics, which keep your digestive system healthy and may help to boost your immunity. Yogurt is also a good source of protein and, it would be wise to choose low fat yogurt – low in unhealthy saturated fats.
Yogurt is very popular as a snack and as a healthy dessert – you’ll find many different flavors in the dairy case at your grocery store (and even frozen yogurt). Be sure to look at the labels of flavored yogurts, many of them contain artificial flavors and colors that you may not want (especially the brands marketed to kids). Your best choice is plain white low-fat yogurt. You can easily dress it up by adding honey, chopped nuts, berries or granola. Which one do you choose? Use our FoodEssentials tool to compare plain yogurt by the amount of fat:
There are several varieties that are actually fat-free and two more that are low fat. Any of these brands are good choices. Be wary of those full-fat yogurts at the bottom that contain as much as 10 grams of total fat.
