Superfood Tip 4: Low Fat Milk
by Shereen Jegtvig
Milk and dairy products are rich in calcium that your body needs to build strong bones and healthy teeth. But your body also needs calcium for normal muscle and nerve function and for your blood to clot properly. Milk is also rich in potassium, protein and is usually fortified with vitamin D. It’s easy to see why milk is such an important part of the USDA Food Pyramid.
While whole-milk is rich in calcium, it’s also high in saturated fats that can clog up your arteries and raise your cholesterol. Low-fat milk has less of the saturated fat so it’s a much better choice for the milk you drink or use in cooking.
Many consumers prefer organic low-fat milk so they don’t have to worry about growth hormones or antiobiotics. Use our FoodEssentials tool to find organic lowfat milk.
You’ll find several brands and even different flavors of low fat milk (just watch for extra sugar) to boost your family’s calcium intake.
